Maf Lopez
Maf Lopez works with illustration and 2D animation to highlight and celebrate womanhood and its diverse experiences. She’s strongly influenced by the folklore and traditional iconography of her native Mexico and is interested in capturing women’s ever-changing minds and bodies through hyperbolic proportions and colour contrast to emphasise their strength and value.
Maf has been honoured with Passion Picture’s “Passion Prize” and has worked with renowned clients such as Netflix and Airbnb. She’s a recurring collaborator as clean-up artist for the lovely peeps at Jelly London and is currently engaged in her next short-film project “The Itch”, a story about a young girl’s discovery of her own body and its taboo machinations.
Why I applied
I applied for the mentoring programme as a way to push myself, grow my confidence as an artist, and improve my skills as an animator. When I first moved to London, She Drew That became an instant hub for support and community, and I just knew their programme would be a dream come true and exactly what I needed to get out of my creative slump.
Project Outline
My project “La Furia” focuses on the complex relationship between a girl, her mother, and their shared experience with anger (“the fury”). A short film that explores the nuanced realities of motherhood beyond idealised portrayals, revealing the raw and challenging aspects some children must face at a young age.
"Having Lizzy Hobbs as a mentor was beyond lovely and a truly enriching experience. It gave me immense confidence as a creator and returned my excitement for animation. Our mentoring sessions were perfect to develop work and feel supported throughout, with Hannah also being an incredible guiding light for the entire programme. This opportunity really offered an amazing space to grow as an artist, hand in hand with Lizzy! Someone I’ve admired for years. I loved the experience and would recommend it to anyone looking for a 360 in their practice."
