Hoching Kwok
Hoching Kwok is a Hong Kong filmmaker and storyboard artist based in Bristol who creates 2D animated films with vivid colour palettes and expressive line work. She has a keen interest in exploring the complexities of adolescence and self-identity and her films draw heavily on her own experience of growing up in Hong Kong.
Hoching’s university films, 'Prince Edward' (2021) and 'When Cicadas Sing' (2022) have screened internationally and been showcased at events including the Monstra Festival, Taichung International Animation Festival, Manchester Animation Festival, the Royal Television Awards, and the British Animation Awards.
After graduating Hoching was commissioned by Cbeebies to create an animated short about the lunar new year, and has been a storyboard artist on the animated series 'Moominvalley' and 'Maddie & Triggs'.
Why I applied
I applied for this mentorship programme as I wanted to develop a compelling short film pitch for a personal project and wanted a professional's advice. I aimed to create a pitch for 'Midnight Graduate', a coming-of-age story about two teenage boys pondering their future while they play basketball in the dead of the night.
"To say that this mentorship had been amazing would be an understatement! It was an invaluable experience that not only improved my filmmaking but also refreshed my mindset about making short films in the long run. My mentor, Ivyy Chen, was the perfect balance of critical and understanding: someone who would tell me bluntly when something wasn't working and someone who would advise me gently when I faltered or felt burnt out. She patiently looked over iteration after iteration of the story and taught me how to work on story pitches independently. The fortnightly calls and deadlines also motivated me to work harder and maintain a more stable pace in terms of project development. Without this mentorship and Ivyy, 'Midnight Graduate' would not have had the chance to flourish and develop."
